High-Valued Biomolecules from Algal Biomass: Research Gaps, Innovative Roadmaps for Safety and Quality Assurance
摘要
The growing global demand for sustainable and health-promoting bioproducts has intensified research on algal biomass as a rich source of high-value biomolecules. Micro- and macroalgae possess exceptional biochemical diversity, producing lipids, proteins, polysaccharides, pigments, vitamins, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds that have broad applications in nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, bioplastics, and functional foods. However, ensuring the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance of algal-derived products remains a critical challenge. This chapter provides an integrated overview of algal biomass valorization with emphasis on biotechnological processes leading to high-value biomolecule extraction, purification, and characterization. It also highlights recent innovations in cultivation systems, process intensification, and cascade biorefining to enhance product yield and quality. Furthermore, this chapter identifies key research gaps in standardization, biosafety, and certification, and proposes innovative roadmaps for ensuring the safety and quality assurance of algal biomolecules in alignment with global food and pharmaceutical standards.
