Contraceptive implants are a highly effective form of progestin-only contraception. The implant(s) are placed subdermally, effective for several years, and their contraceptive effects are rapidly reversible. Contraceptive implants have few medical contraindications. Women with a history of a blood clot, women who are lactating, adolescents, and women with obesity are all candidates to use contraceptive implants. The implant is placed in the upper arm by a clinician who has completed a company-mandated training program. Women may experience menstrual bleeding changes with the implant that can be managed medically when the symptoms are bothersome.
