Breaking Field-Specific Silos by Introducing Principle-Driven Requirements Engineering (PDRE) Toward Sustainable Software Quality

The digital transformation revolution has been crawling toward all aspects of our lives, transforming human activities into digital solutions. The transformation process efficiency relies on the quality of the developed digital solutions including software and hardware components. Software components are the product of a software development lifecycle (SDLC), starting from requirements engineering (RE), all the way to solution deployment. RE produces business artifacts including business requirement documents, software requirement specification as well as epics and user stories, all the way down to solitary acceptance criteria. The quality of business artifacts influences the quality and efficiency of later phases in SDLC, hence, the overall value proposition of the final software. RE is strongly challenged by various aspects including the business analyst human nature, communication skills, domain expertise, logical reasoning, language proficiency and documentation competency in addition to requirements complexity. In this paper, the integration of software development principles and methodologies is introduced to enhance RE. The proposed approach incorporates key concepts including software design patterns, SOLID principles, DRY, KISS and YAGNI. Results from sample subject projects demonstrated that the proposed methodology significantly reduced requirements volatility from 80% to 23% and defect leakage from 27% to 6%, while eliminating business-related inter-team collision instances.
