The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is a mechanism for reducing the adverse effects of traffic pollution in an urban area environment, where exhaust emissions are strictly regulated to meet environmental limits. Such solutions for urban environment protection are gaining popularity, especially in Western European conurbations, where there are currently more than 300 zones, mainly in Italy and Germany. On the other hand, until recently, no LEZ has been operated in the Central and Eastern European countries. Yet nowadays, Warsaw authorities just launched a LEZ in 2024. According to the activated project, the zone will be implemented in five stages between 2024 and 2032, in which the emission criteria will tighten accordingly. The gradually reduced emissions of NOX and PM were utilized as the input dataset in simulations by the CALPUFF model to assess the impact of the LEZ activation on lowering the traffic-related pollution in the zone as well as in the city as a whole.
