Dietary Changes and Resilience in Older Adults
摘要
This chapter examines the impact of physiological, psychological, social, economic and cultural changes on the eating behaviour of older adults, as well as the mechanisms that support their dietary resilience. A literature review shows that health limitations, loss of mobility or sensory functions, retirement, widowhood and social isolation can negatively affect food intake and nutritional quality. At the same time, many older adults actively develop resilience strategies, which include adapting their diet, planning meals, using practical aids, maintaining social contacts and engaging in community activities. Cultural and emotional aspects, such as returning to traditional foods, commensality and mindful eating, play a key role in sustaining identity, meaning in life and a sense of wellbeing. The chapter emphasises that dietary resilience is not merely a matter of adaptation but a dynamic process that interconnects the physical, social and cultural dimensions of older adults’ lives, supporting autonomy, dignity and quality of life in old age.
