Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape of law enforcement, offering advanced capabilities in data processing, predictive analytics, and operational efficiency. However, the integration of these technologies within the Australian policing context presents a set of opportunities and risks. This chapter examines the current and future trajectory of AI deployment for Australian police forces. It explores high-impact technologies such as facial recognition and predictive policing tools, weighing their potential to modernize crime prevention against ethical and legal concerns. Particular attention is paid to the Australian socio-political landscape, including the absence of a national Human Rights Act, the implications for policing Indigenous communities, and the current “patchwork” of state-based regulations. Drawing on recent inquiries by the Australian Human Rights Commission and global best practices, this chapter argues that the future legitimacy of AI in Australian policing depends not on technological capability but on the establishment of a robust, transparent, and nationally consistent ethical framework that prioritizes human-in-the-loop accountability.
