Decisive Philosophy: The Rationale and Potential of Philosophically Informed Strategy Development in Business
摘要
This chapter examines the practical application of philosophical inquiry to business strategy, proposing an approach that opposes reductionism and simplification in business decision-making. It argues that strategy is less about solving data equations but rather a process of creation that responds to a living environment. Philosophy masters this capacity through concept creation, enabling strategic navigation in contemporary times. The case study is a two-year advisory engagement with a heritage wine trading company, addressing questions of growth strategy and systemic transition. Confronting declining wine consumption and evolving cultural pressures, the 200-year-old company explored non- and low-alcoholic beverages as a future pillar of the business. Tactical market analysis evolved into fundamental inquiry about organisational interpretation of change, exposing tensions between tradition and innovation, analysis and intuition. Philosophy serves as a practical methodology that surfaces assumptions, generates meaning, and reframes decision-making. It supports adaptive responses grounded in organisational beliefs, language, and mental models. This approach positions strategy as creative and relational, developing through iteration, participation, and shared narrative. Drawing on aesthetic and artistic practice, it enables organisations to engage with uncertainty as generative possibility. Philosophical inquiry equips organisations to fruitfully engage with complexity without paralysis and act purposefully amid ambiguity, rethinking strategy as a fluid, creative process.
