Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly expanding technology that seeks to replicate human cognitive functions such as learning, reasoning and language comprehension. The integration of intelligent systems into daily routines and the evolution of citizens’ behaviours present a significant challenge for contemporary societies. These transformations give rise to novel social, cultural, ethical and legal challenges, necessitating a re-evaluation of regulatory frameworks to ensure that such changes are managed appropriately and that less technologically developed societies are not adversely affected. The United Nations (UN) approaches the issue of AI from a multidisciplinary perspective, proposing an ethical framework intended to facilitate the achievement of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to ensure the respect of human rights. Nevertheless, the absence of international regulation and legal enforcement mechanisms means that the success of these proposals is contingent on international cooperation and the political will of states.
