It is estimated that 21% of all women and 6% of all men, aged 50 years or older are affected by osteoporosis- 500 million persons worldwide. There are about 37 million fragility fractures per year worldwide. Most osteoporotic fractures occur at vertebral bodies, the hip, the wrist, the proximal humerus and the pelvic ring. Approximately 40% of all 50-year old women and 15% of all 50-year old men will suffer a fracture during their lifetime. There is an increase of more than 30% in the incidence of osteoporotic fractures over the last 15 years and also the osteoporotic treatment gap is rising. Osteoporotic hip fractures still have a mortality rate of up to 25%. About 75% of the medical costs for osteoporosis were dispensed on women. Hip fractures account for the majority of direct and indirect care costs of all osteoporotic fractures.
