A new era in the treatment of disorders of bone began about 45 years ago with the introduction of bisphosphonates (BP) into clinical practice. BP are deposited on the surface of the bones, inhibiting osteoclasts and thus resorption of bone. Consequently, these drugs have long been given to patients with Morbus Paget, with hypercalcaemia, with multiple myeloma and with osseous metastases. BP not only inhibit resorption of bone, but they also inhibit the growth of metastases in bone and marrow.

摘要

A new era in the treatment of disorders of bone began about 45 years ago with the introduction of bisphosphonates (BP) into clinical practice. BP are deposited on the surface of the bones, inhibiting osteoclasts and thus resorption of bone. Consequently, these drugs have long been given to patients with Morbus Paget, with hypercalcaemia, with multiple myeloma and with osseous metastases. BP not only inhibit resorption of bone, but they also inhibit the growth of metastases in bone and marrow.
