The Essence of Servant Leadership
摘要
Herman Hesse’s story Journey to the East inspired Robert Greenleaf’s servant leadership theory. The story revolves around a party of explores that hires a servant and when that servant must leave to return to his village the troubles start to happen (Sendjaya & Sarros, 2002). Greenleaf argues that it is the servant that held things together (Greenleaf, 1977, 1991). That by his service to the party he actually led the party to success. Without his leadership through service the journey fell into disarray. This concept revolves around the leadership philosophy that prioritizes serving others above self-interest (Greenleaf, 1977, 1991). It emphasizes the growth, well-being, and development of followers and communities rather than the accumulation of power or personal gain. This emphasis on growth of the followers reverses the traditional logic of power by placing service to others at the center of leadership practice (Greenleaf, 1977, 1991).
