Metacommunication: Talking About the Dialogue with AI
摘要
This chapter examines metacommunication as a critical dimension of effective human–AI interaction. Metacommunication refers to communication about the communicative process itself, including preferences, strategies, expectations and evaluation criteria. Because generative AI systems lack implicit awareness of user norms and interaction styles, explicit metacommunication becomes essential for sustained alignment and productive collaboration. The chapter explores how users can express and negotiate communication preferences, modify dialogue strategies during interaction, request alternative approaches and perspectives and reflect systematically on the quality and effectiveness of AI-mediated dialogue. It also examines how metacommunicative awareness develops over time through experience and reflection. By framing metacommunication as a learned and evolving human skill, the chapter positions reflective dialogue management as a hallmark of advanced AI communication literacy. This perspective prepares readers to engage with generative AI not only as a responsive system but as a communicative partner within an intentional, adaptive and ethically grounded interaction process.
