This chapter defines and describes the various roles and responsibilities of NPS volunteers using a schematic developed based on how park volunteers and rangers described the work they do. Volunteer roles are located on two dimensions: degree of autonomy and required specialized training. Their roles are categorized as Visible SpecialistsVolunteers, role ofvisible specialists, Public-Facing CommunicatorsVolunteers, role ofpublic facing communicators, Public-Facing LeadersVolunteers, role ofpublic facing leaders, Hidden DoersVolunteers, role ofHidden Doers, and InterpretationVolunteers, role ofinterpretation Volunteers. Specific functions are described under each category using the words of volunteers and rangers. This chapter closes with the author’s reflection on his own multiple roles as an embedded researcherEmbedded research/volunteer during the research.
