Introduction to Solid State Physics

This Chapter introduces the fundamental concepts of solid-state physics, focusing on the Bravais lattice and atomic basis that define a crystal. While different elements may share the same lattice, their atomic basis determines valence and the number of conduction electrons. As a result, a material’s conductive or insulating behavior depends on both crystal symmetry and atomic composition. These concepts provide the foundation for understanding the physics of semiconductor gas sensors.
