This introductory chapter describes the book’s goals to present targeted killing as an important subject of study in the wider socio- and geopolitics. Sometimes termed as state-sponsored targeted killing, state-sponsored assassination, or a combination of synonyms, targeted killing is not a standalone phenomenon. Rather, state-sponsored targeted killings are the end stages in a longer process of escalation, used globally regardless of government type, justification, or target.
