This Chapter critically discusses, as a preliminary inquiry, the very concepts of “citizenship” and “education”, providing basic information on their history and discussing competing meanings in order to put actual practices into question. It subsequently analyses the ways in which the fundamental antinomy between “emancipating” and “conforming” within educational agencies shapes both “critical” pedagogical approaches and the practice of citizenship education.
