This chapter argues that increasing assaults on academic freedomacademic freedom and tenuretenure are signs that the foundations of late academelate academe are starting to crumble fast. From the perspective of late academe, this can only be viewed as an acceleration of the extinctionextinction of higher education in America. The twilight of tenure and academic freedom is a sign that critical inquirycritical inquiry, social justicesocial justice, and democraticdemocracy educationdemocratic education are in their final days. The twilight of the tenure though is one of the painful costs of late academe on its road to extinction.
