This chapter investigates five fellowship societies in the Netherlands over the twentieth century. These societies play an important role in bringing together influential people from the business elite. We use membership lists of the societies and names of exchange-listed Dutch non-financial firms’ board members to trace fellows’ presence on corporate boards. Using firm characteristics, we model which firms have fellows on their boards and assess the effects of their presence on firm performance.

摘要

This chapter investigates five fellowship societies in the Netherlands over the twentieth century. These societies play an important role in bringing together influential people from the business elite. We use membership lists of the societies and names of exchange-listed Dutch non-financial firms’ board members to trace fellows’ presence on corporate boards. Using firm characteristics, we model which firms have fellows on their boards and assess the effects of their presence on firm performance.
