The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) explicitly advocates mother-tongue-based education and multilingualism as crucial paths for creating equitable and inclusive education in the country. This chapter attempts to understand whether the conceptualisation and operationalisation of these strategies align with the multilingual realities of India. Examining the policy through the theoretical framework of standard language ideology (SLI) and linguistic capital, the work argues that the numerous ambiguities present in the NEP 2020 document facilitate the privileging of standard, dominant languages while marginalising non-standard, minority languages. It also presents the argument that NEP 2020 promotes managed diversity, which acknowledges linguistic plurality but often fails to promote linguistic justice. In doing so, the chapter offers actionable suggestions for NEP 2020 to address the lived multilingual realities of India.

摘要
