The chapter contrasts 2000s South Korean and 1980s West German unification discourse. Both Germany and Korea were divided in the wake of World War II. Division in both countries, however, differed significantly. Nevertheless, following economic growth and a sense of superiority, a sense of accepting division as the status quo can be traced among in both cases. The youth in both cases appears to have had a sinking interest towards unification. Conservatives in both countries opted for notions of a state-centred nationalism in opposition to ethnic nationalism. Unlike Germany, this was met with fierce resistance from progressives in Korea, where a language of ‘anti-national traitors’ dominates a sharply polarised discourse. Yet, if Germany’s reunification in 1989–1990 provides any historical lesson, it has shown that domestic discourse can change in an instant. South Korea ought to further study Germany’s post-reunification experience and also consider Austro-German relations since German unification in the nineteenth century.

摘要
