A Cognitive Poetic Model of Humour
摘要
Here, the components of a new way of modelling humour are presented. Key terms are defined and introduced as the source of humour, the receiver of humour and the relay. It is argued that humour is a process that can be modelled by considering the spatial dynamics of convergence and divergence of source, relay and receiver. It is also argued that these spatial dynamics are connected to the construction of a viewing arrangement in which the process of communication is figured. This idea is related to the notion, from Reversal Theory, of activity-focused arousal-seeking paratelic state. The parameters for developing and testing this model are set out, proposing that, by modelling humour in this way, frameworks already in common use in stylistics can be used in its practical analysis.
