Rubus nubigenus Focke has been recommended for breeding programs due to its large fruit size with good to superior quality. It could be ideal for crosses to improve fruit size among other Rubus species. R. nubigenus has been taken out of its native environment for reproduction purposes, but these attempts have failed. Currently, the hybridization process with other blackberry species has not produced viable plants or successful outcomes. Germplasm repositories are key for breeding programs. The ex situ Colombian collection of germplasm is home to 95 accessions of Rubus L., most of which belong to Rubus glaucus Benth., which include both cultivated ecotypes and wild plants. This collection does not include accessions of Rubus nubigenus. However, the ex situ collection of La Selva Research Center previously housed R. nubigenus, which was known as Morón.
