Listening Calmly: Discernment in Onstage Listening
摘要
This chapter considers the importance of being a careful listener in Jonson’s The Staple of News and Shirley’s Hyde Park, demonstrating the ways in which music can be used to challenge the listener’s expectations and morals, meaning that they must be calm and discerning to avoid being deceived. The chapter argues that both Jonson and Shirley present morality tales through music and song about the dangers of being too obsessed with money and the consequences of falling in love too easily. The first section of the chapter argues that Jonson uses song in The Staple of News to warn his audience that one of the consequences of not listening carefully and rationally enough is losing money or not using money appropriately. The second section demonstrates how music and sound are used in Hyde Park to alert its characters of the dangers of falling for flattery and getting too absorbed in the feeling of being in love so that they can make better choices in romantic relationships.
