This study explores strategies for reducing dependence on private cars by evaluating the potential of bus on-demand services as a sustainable alternative in the suburban areas of Gothenburg. Unlike conventional bus routes, these services utilize minibuses that pick up passengers either from fixed stops or dynamically designated virtual stops near their homes, with fares equivalent to regular bus tickets. By grouping passengers from the same area, bus on-demand services offer a tailored and flexible transit option. To assess their viability, we surveyed a diverse group of residents, asking them to choose their preferred mode of transport under varying time and cost conditions. Our findings indicate that willingness to adopt new travel modes and existing travel habits significantly influence preferences, alongside other contributing factors. Despite these complexities, bus on-demand services demonstrate considerable promise for enhancing public transportation by increasing flexibility, efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability. Their successful implementation could reduce urban car usage, lower carbon dioxide emissions, and foster the development of more sustainable urban environments for future generations.

摘要
