Uncovering Obstacles for Women Plantation Workers Through the DEMATEL Framework

The objective of this study is to find, evaluate, and develop a model to understand the relationship among the barriers impacting the women employed in the plantation sector. The DEMATEL method is used to examine the interrelationships among barriers and identify their mutual dependence. Nine barriers have been identified through a literature review and expert opinion from women working in the plantation sector. The outcome of the study reveals that a Single earning member, Low wages, Wage discrimination, and Health risk are the crucial barriers impacting women in the plantation sector. The findings from the research will be helpful for the plantation workers to understand the most noteworthy barriers and the less impactful barriers. This acquaintance can increase awareness among the women plantation workers about the challenges and empower them with improvements. It provides a basis for plantation industries to address these critical issues by creating a safe and worker-friendly environment. Workplace safety and worker welfare can be enhanced when the challenges faced by them are addressed. The DEMATEL approach is the first attempt to study the barriers faced by women in the plantation sector.
