This article presents an inventory for the assessment of university students’ perceptions of the socio-affective competence of empathy (SACE) in a virtual learning environment (VLE). The aim to map empathetic communication from the empathy components: social, affective, cognitive, and technological. Therefore, 30 students from two graduate courses supported by a VLE at a Brazilian public university participated in the research. A quantitative approach was used to confirm the coherence and relevance of the questions, and a qualitative approach was used to verify the clarity of the inventory, through a case study. The results show an acceptable level (∝ = 0.793), good relevance in the relationship between questions, and clear language. This study’s contribution is the presentation of the stages of constructing a research inventory and the results of quality attributes for reliable data collection. In addition to assessing the students’ empathy components and empathetic communication in VLE, this instrument can be a resource for teachers to implement more appropriate pedagogical strategies to improve or build SACE.

摘要
