Event-related potentials (ERPs) are one of the most common applications for EEG. Many ERPs are linked to different sensory or cognitive processes, and they are investigated whenever researchers are interested in brain responses time-locked to an event. This chapter will enable you to create your own ERPs from pre-processed EEG data and provide you with some background information on the basic principles behind ERPs and how to interpret them. The characteristic shape of the ERP waveform will be discussed, and some typical examples of ERP components will be covered in brief. The chapter will close with a discussion of typical ERP features that can be extracted for statistical analysis.
