To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper studying and comparing the pros and cons of rotating and irregular workforce scheduling. The study is based on the requirements of real-world workforce scheduling. The two main goals of workforce scheduling are the performance of staff on financial efficiency and employee satisfaction. Furthermore, the needs of today’s working life and employees include fluctuating staff demand, recovery issues, and work-life balance. Due to the labor shortage, working conditions and employee satisfaction have become competitive factors between companies. We use three examples to compare the performance between rotating and irregular scheduling. The results show that irregular scheduling methods can combine the best of both worlds. Irregular scheduling responds to changing demands and workload, satisfies required competencies, and handles employee requests.
