Chapter 6 discusses the challenges for individuals trying to overcome the barriers of political representation, summarizes the conclusions to be drawn from this analysis and illustrates their current operation through my own experience as a city council candidate in District 14 in the 2021 Democratic primary in the Bronx. It also establishes the current increase in Dominican ancestry elected officials and posits how this points the way forward for Dominican influence in the political life of the city. It includes recent examples of the model of adapting to locations in the deployment of Dominican identity (in special elections in the Bronx), and some of the moves the “Espaillat Machine” has made in the Bronx, to further illustrate how the history of the political mobilization of the community is playing out in its rise to power and expansion. The goal is for this analytical model to offer other communities facing similar challenges insights into how they might leverage their unique strengths to overcome traditional disadvantages in electoral politics—even if that means confronting emerging political machines, such as the growing Dominican power base expanding from Manhattan into the Bronx.

摘要
