The exponential growth of technology has profoundly transformed the global economy, bringing with it both opportunities and challenges. From a dual perspective, this study explores how digitalization has influenced economic and financial crime. On one hand, technological advancement have enhanced the tools and systems available to prevent, spot and combat economic and financial crime through sophisticated security infrastructures. On the other hand, the digitalization process has enabled new forms of digital fraud and economic and financial crime, offering law breakers more accessible and discreet methods of operation. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis using the Web of Science scientific database and the VOSviewer software in order to examine the academic literature on this subject. Through a series of tools, such as co-citation analysis, co-authorship mapping or keyword co-occurrence, the research identifies the most influential articles, prolific authors and major research trends within this thematic area. Additionally, the study clusters the literature according to the two main perspectives: technology perceived as a progressive factor on the economy versus technology as a facilitator of economic and financial crime. The final objective and the main conclusion of the study is to provide a comprehensive overview of the academic discourse surrounding economic and financial crime in the context of the digital era, highlighting gaps in current research and proposing potential directions for future investigations. Due to the dynamic and constantly evolving nature of technology, ongoing monitoring and academic investigation into digitalization’s impact on economic and financial crime are crucial for developing effective policies and counteraction strategies.
