The relationship between the individual and society is a topic of discussion in traditional philosophy, particularly social philosophy, as well as in sociology and political science. Put simply, there are two distinct approaches: those that start methodologically from the individual and ask how communities or societies can arise from the aggregation of individuals, and those that start methodologically from social structures and ask how the individual can be integrated into these structures.
