This chapter presents fundamental understandings that form an analytical basis for the further explanations. This initially concerns Karl Popper’s Three Worlds Theory, which facilitates access to sustainable development by separating the levels of the physical, individual consciousness, and culture as a social construct. We then deal with the critical framework that we apply to current understandings of sustainability.
