‘Judging a Book by Its Cover’: Simulation, Bias, and Intercultural Learning
摘要
This paper examines the potential and effectiveness of Kaleidoscope (an immersive simulation) and accompanying pedagogical intervention to foster intercultural learning in an interdisciplinary first-year college seminar by encouraging participants to confront their cultural bias and guiding them to reflect on their cultural assumptions. Using a mixed-method approach, we assessed the effectiveness of immersive simulation and debriefing as an educational practice. Qualitative analysis of student reflections showed that the pairing encouraged students to realize how easy it is to make assumptions but that the critical reflection and debriefing also enabled them to envision a change in their behavior and recognize the links one makes between physical appearance on the one hand and cultures/values/behaviors on the other hand. These themes illustrate the potential of immersive educational experiences coupled with debriefing to bring learning alive and make it more impactful.
