Artificial agents learn and operate within socio-digital environments composed of online platforms, human users, and institutional frameworks. Such settings play a crucial role in mediating both the formation of good intentions within artificial agents and the translation of those intentions into desired outcomes. For this reason, strategies aimed at improving socio-digital environments are necessary complements to the ethical design of artificial agents. This chapter contributes to that task. After introducing the core issue (Sect. 11.1), the chapter examines the defining characteristics of contemporary digital settings (Sect. 11.2) and illustrates how artificial agents actively interact with these environments (Sect. 11.3). It then maps several strategies for improving socio-digital environments (Sect. 11.4), focusing on the learning conditions of artificial agents, mechanisms for controlling their use, and ways to enhance their social acceptance.
