The Growing Threat of Extreme Weather Events in the Middle East
摘要
The Middle East is entering a new era of climate vulnerability, where extreme heatwaves, dust storms, tropical cyclones, and rare Mediterranean hurricanes are converging to create unprecedented risks for societies and ecosystems. Driven by rising temperatures, warming seas, and shifting atmospheric patterns, these events are increasing in frequency and intensity, threatening public health, infrastructure, and economic stability. Recent disasters such as Cyclone Shaheen, Storm Daniel, and record-breaking regional heatwaves highlight the urgency of strengthening resilience across multiple fronts, including heat action plans, flood-ready infrastructure, land and water management, and early warning systems. At the same time, the spread of conspiracy theories and misinformation following major storms underscores the importance of transparent communication and public trust in science-based strategies. Addressing these escalating challenges will require urgent investment in adaptation, resilience, and public awareness to safeguard communities against the growing threat of extreme weather events.
