Women are significant contributors to the blue economy through various roles, and women’s empowerment is a powerful driver of building a sustainable blue economy. The relationship between women’s empowerment and sustainable blue economy is intricate and mutually reinforcing. This chapter aims to examine the present and potential future role of women in different sectors of the blue economy (Fisheries and Aquaculture, Tourism, Deep-Sea Research, Extraction of Critical Minerals and Genetic Materials, Ecosystem and Nature Conservation, and Renewable Energy) and emphasize the importance of these sectors in women empowerment. The study explores the global status of women in blue economy showing a significant gender disparity in different areas. The chapter also tries to identify the systemic challenges such as gender discrimination, low pay, safety concerns, limited access to resources, lack of authority, or representation that hinder women’s full participation in the blue economy. Finally, the study seeks to highlight how women empowerment can enhance their ability and unlock their potential to contribute to the blue economy’s growth and sustainability. The implications of this study emphasize the need for gender inclusive policies, financial support, and capacity-building programs to empower women especially in the coastal regions. It seeks to inspire action for a more equitable blue economy that balances economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social well-being. This book chapter serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and advocates interested in advancing gender equality and sustainability in the context of the blue economy.

摘要
