Plastic Pollution and Its Ripple Effect on the Blue Economy Development in Morocco
摘要
This chapter explores the intricate challenge of plastic pollution within the context of Morocco’s blue economy, highlighting its impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems. The blue economy, an economic framework aimed at sustainable industrialization of ocean resources, is critical for Morocco’s development but it is significantly hindered by plastic pollution. Morocco, a leader in African fish production and a key player in various marine sectors such as aquaculture, ports, and coastal tourism, faces substantial challenges from plastic waste, which disrupts marine ecosystems, fisheries, and tourism, thereby threatening economic growth. Despite efforts to address waste management through national strategies and legislative frameworks, plastic pollution persists due to inefficiencies in current systems and a lack of viable alternatives. Through a systematic analysis of the literature, this chapter underscores the need for comprehensive policies, enhanced public awareness, and international cooperation to effectively combat plastic pollution and promote a resilient blue economy in Morocco. Our research calls for improved waste management systems, development of alternative materials, and robust measures to mitigate the environmental impacts, ensuring long-term economic and ecological sustainability.
