In September 1966, I gave my first invited talkInvited talk at an international symposium on ocean wavesOcean waves in Washington, DC. I was there as a substitute for Harvard Professor George CarrierGeorge Carrier, Member NAS, who was invited to speak about tsunamis. Carrier was bored with the thought of having to give this talk again, and at the last minute he asked me, as a newly minted PhD, to go to Washington in his place. He encouraged me to talk about my thesis research on continental shelf waves. What an honor! But it was a frightening experience since all the other invited speakers were twice my age. I survived however, and now, looking back six decades later, I see how important it is for the career of young scholars to give invited papers. Just do it!
