Caught in a Rip Current, Waikiki Beach, Honolulu
摘要
In February 1991, I was participating in a climate workshop in Honolulu. After a long day of intense discussions on the mechanisms for decadal-scale natural climate variability, I decided to take a relaxing swim out to a reef near the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel, Waikiki BeachWaikiki Beach, Honolulu. Getting out to the reef was easy, but for some crazy reason, I started swimming past the reef out to the open ocean, going with the flow of a strong rip currentRip current. I suddenly realized that I could not swim against it to return to shore. However, by thrashing my way over to the reef and then slowly clawing over it toward the shore, I managed to survive. I was a mess with much blood on my hands and very lucky there were no sharks nearby!
