On Becoming a “Fellow”
摘要
In April 1986, I learned of my election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of CanadaRoyal Society of Canada (FRSC), often considered the highest Canadian honor for an academic in any field of science, the humanities, and the social sciences. My then wife Mary and I went to Winnipeg, Manitoba for the inductionInduction as FRSC (in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 1946) ceremony, which was held in June at the University of Manitoba. Here we met newly and previously elected Fellows from across Canada, including Don BettsDon Betts, one of my favorite undergraduate physics professors at the University of Alberta. After attending various business meetings of the RSC, I vowed that after settling into McGill in September 1986 (Chap. 15 ) I would get involved in the activities of the academy. Little did I know that in less than a decade I would be presiding over the Academy of Science, the largest of the three academies that comprise the RSC (Chap. 19 ).
