Coastal development creates coastal environmental impacts. The development and sustainability need to be integrated. Raising awareness of how human activities along the coast can damage the environment is the first step towards sustainable coastal development. This review compiles recent publications (mostly during 2023–2025) on aspects of how coastal tourism, port and shipping activities, urbanization, and coastal structures have affected the environment. To be successful in protecting the coastal environment, we call for two actions, 1) more funding for coastal environmental research and 2) more dedicated actions to resolve the coastal environmental problems.
