Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) have emerged as a revolutionary technology in the wireless communication domain, particularly with the advent of 5G and prospective 6G networks. RIS technology is based on metasurfaces that manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves to optimize network coverage, signal strength, and efficiency. This paper presents a comprehensive review of RIS technology covering its fundamental principles, types, applications, and hybrid configurations. Special emphasis is placed on comparing different RIS designs based on PIN diodes, Varactor diodes, and MEMS. In addition, the paper discusses the challenges associated with RIS deployment and provides an outlook on future research prospects.

摘要
