Key Principles of Husbandry and Management in Nonhuman Primate Research
摘要
Appropriate husbandry is a fundamental cornerstone of nonhuman primate research. Beyond the ethical and moral responsibility to house research animals to the highest standards, the scientific implications are equally significant. Only when research animals are healthy can reliable, high-quality data be produced. This chapter outlines the core principles for implementing effective husbandry practices in nonhuman primate research and care settings, with a focus on housing, enrichment and behavioural management. The first section covers the basic requirements for nonhuman primate housing, including enclosure design, facility layout and environmental parameters essential to animal welfare. The second section discusses both social and non-social enrichment strategies, providing the necessary background for those aiming to establish effective enrichment and behavioural management programmes.
