The Sisters in Distress
摘要
This chapter begins with a brief overview of the two correctional homesDumdum Central Correctional Home and Alipore Women’s Correctional Home. In this chapter, I have provided a quantitative overview of the inmates. It contains the social characteristics of the prisoners like age, religion, marriage, children, siblings, education, work, economic class, nature of crimes committed, nationality, etc. These kinds of descriptive statistics have helped to understand their social attitudes as well as their behaviour patterns. This chapter found that poverty is an important variable that explains why these women are in prison in the first place. This has been an important argument of this book—that it is poverty which is the root cause behind most of the crimes committed by these women. In this chapter, we also present the Tests of Associations run on the data obtained from the 101 women spoken to.
