This chapter is an introduction to the book. It is a book about women inmates in two of the most famous correctional homes in the Indian state of West Bengal, Kolkata—50 women from Dumdum Central Correctional Home and 51 more women from Alipore Women’s Correctional Home. This chapter discusses the problems encountered in trying to write about them, to bring their stories to light, to tell their problems to the world, to talk about the things which they will never be able to talk about. This chapter focuses on some of the vital issues confronting those doing academic work on women in prisons. It discusses the difficulties encountered in speaking with these women as well as the methodology used in writing about them. The data for this book has been collected using unstructured and semi-structured interviews. The data for this book has been analysed through a mix of quantitative and qualitative techniques. This chapter also contains some comments, remarks and phrases of the inmates which show the miserable situations they are in. This chapter concludes by highlighting the need and significance of the study in the present-day context.
