Lucy Kalanithi, MD
摘要
This chapter profiles Dr. Lucy Kalanithi, an internal medicine physician whose literary contributions emerged from profound personal loss. Born to a multicultural family, Dr. Kalanithi graduated from Yale School of Medicine where she met neurosurgeon Dr. Paul Kalanithi (Kalanithi L, Dr. Lucy Kalanithi. After completing internal medicine residency at UCSF and a fellowship at Stanford’s Clinical Excellence Research Center, she became both caregiver and literary partner when Paul was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2013 (Stanford Daily, Stanford neurosurgeon and writer Paul Kalanithi dies at 37. https://stanforddaily.com/2015/03/21/stanford-neurosurgeon-and-writer-paul-kalanithi-dies-at-37/ , 2015, March 21; AAE Speakers Bureau, Dr. Lucy Kalanithi. https://www.aaespeakers.com/keynote-speakers/dr-lucy-kalanithi , n.d.). Their daughter Cady was born on July 4, 2014, and Paul Kalanithi died on March 9, 2015 (Stanford Daily, Stanford neurosurgeon and writer Paul Kalanithi dies at 37. https://stanforddaily.com/2015/03/21/stanford-neurosurgeon-and-writer-paul-kalanithi-dies-at-37/ , 2015, March 21). Dr. Kalanithi completed his manuscript, contributing a powerful epilogue to “When Breath Becomes Air,” (2016), which became a Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times bestseller with over two million copies sold (Kalanithi P, When breath becomes air. Random House, 2016; Kalanithi L, Epilogue. In Kalanithi IP (ed). When breath becomes air, pp 195–221. Random House, 2016). She has since become a national voice on mortality and meaning through her essay “My Marriage Didn’t End When I Became a Widow,” her award-winning podcast Gravity (2021), and her TEDMED talk (Kalanithi L, Dr. Lucy Kalanithi. Currently a Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford, Dr. Kalanithi focuses on healthcare delivery innovation and patient engagement (Kalanithi L, Dr. Lucy Kalanithi.
