The Christian Missionary Activities in the Foni and Greater Area of Senegal and the Gambian Region
摘要
Christian missionary activities in Senegambia unfolded in tandem with the efforts of the French and British administrations to introduce Christianity to the local population. Numerous Christian religious organizations collaborated with the colonial government to educate the people and convert them from their traditional beliefs to Christianity. While some members of the Jola community resisted the missionaries’ efforts and chose to continue practicing their indigenous religions, others embraced Christianity. In the Casamance region, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ziguinchor was established on April 25, 1939, serving as a central hub for the spread and expansion of Christianity. Ziguinchor, the capital of the Casamance region, also served as a commercial and administrative center for French colonial expansion in the Senegambia region.
