In the Casamance region, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ziguinchor was established on April 25, 1939, serving as a central hub for the spread and expansion of Christianity. Ziguinchor, the capital of the Casamance region, also served as a commercial and administrative center for French colonial expansion in the Senegambia region.
