The imposition of an anointed candidate ahead of other aspirants by the political gladiators within the same political platform has been a concern ever since independence. The qualities of political parties’ agendas and the charismatic attributes of candidates are emphasised in modern democracies. Considering the demand for political transparency and electioneering legitimacy, this chapter analyses candidates’ selection procedures. A political party is viewed as a platform used in any democracy for presenting a candidate for election. It is worth noting that, in contrast to the empirical findings of this study on the selection process, liberal democracy is based on the premise that the people are in control of the process by which their representatives are elected. Despite Nigeria’s unbroken democratic experience since 1999, each election cycle has been met with widespread public dissatisfaction with its representatives. This chapter (deploying a qualitative method) examines the process of primary elections across political parties in line with their declared party philosophies. The finding reveals that some political gladiators, using their amassed wealth, resort to buying votes during party primaries for themselves or their anointed candidates. The essay concludes that Nigeria’s political party structure and primary election process need to be reviewed to facilitate better election administration.

摘要
