Incumbency Factor and 2023 Governorship Election in Abia and Kano States, Nigeria
摘要
Incumbency is a significant factor in Nigerian government and politics. It is the horse on which political office-seekers ride to retain power both at the national and at the subnational levels of government. However, the outcomes of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria seem to question the viability of incumbency power in retaining political power. This chapter, therefore, examined the factors that played out in the gubernatorial elections in selected states—Abia and Kano states. The chapter employed a historical and narrative design, relying on secondary sources of data. The states of interest, where the incumbent political party lost, were purposively selected for the study. It found that the power of incumbency has been demystified in the chosen states as incumbents lost gallantly to even new political parties. It also found that electoral outcomes are independent of the incumbency factor when elections are fair and credible. Thus, the chapter concluded that the power of the people is more effective than incumbency power in a democracy. It recommended, among other things, improvements in the country’s electoral system through technological innovations that ensure citizens’ votes count.
