Introduction
摘要
To address any issue concerning causality and mechanisms, one needs to have a clear idea of what these two terms signify. Otherwise, without having a proper understanding of their respective meanings, one would be acting against the fundamental principles of reasoning. The problem is that both these notions are very loaded from the historical and theoretical points of view. In fact, there are miles of bookshelves filled with volumes on causation, and there is a substantial body of literature on mechanisms as well. But that is not all. Even for someone without a deep interest in the sciences and their methods, it is obvious that any human attempt to understand the world involves searching for answers to the question of why something has happened, or, in other words, the question of what the reasons or causes of something are. For the sake of clarity, I will first try to specify what the word “cause” signifies, and then I will proceed to discuss the notion of “mechanism.”
